Yesterday, I turned twenty-seven (in lieu of gifts, please send cake). Time has evaporated faster than I ever imagined it could. Now, I’m just a not-so-young, young adult who’s fond of nostalgia.

Taking some time this past week, I penned a list of twenty-seven things I’ve learned these first twenty-seven years of my life. I’ve always found the key to growing is first being aware. Once we are aware, we allow our ears to hear the lessons screaming all around us.

I don’t know if I can trust Matthew McConaughey. He’ll star in a movie like Amistad and I’m ready to join the fan club. Then Failure to Launch will come along and I’m on the verge of throwing him overboard. When I heard rave reviews about his performance in Mud, I quietly wondered if this would be the film that finally gets the romantic comedy virus out of his system. In the end, it just might. I don’t know if it’s because I’m about to be a father or what, but there’s one scene from Man of Steel that gets me every time.

Young Clark Kent is standing in a rickety Kansas barn speaking with the man he just found out is not his biological father.

Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner): You’re the answer, son. You’re the answer to “are we alone in the universe.”

Clark Kent: Can’t I just… keep pretending I’m your son?

Jonathan Kent: You ARE my son.
